2007 Summer Life Enrichment Program
The J. Ashburn Jr. Youth Center Summer Life Enrichment Program was designed for area underprivileged youth and provides programming that is a combination of both academic and social development activities. The 2007 SLEP was centered on the theme “Life Choices,” which consisted of topics each week that taught participants the importance of putting themselves in position to make healthy decisions. To accomplish this task, each topic was defined and discussed during morning announcements with our camp as a whole, as well as breakout Mentoring Sessions with the children in different grade levels. During these Sessions, instructors used real life scenarios to help students relate and achieve a better understanding. Also, the structure of the program revolved around a schedule that included both academics during the morning, as well as enrichment activities in the afternoon. Most importantly, all participants received free breakfast, lunch, and dinner meals to ensure that they were well nourished during each program day. The result was a program success that served a total of 90 youth throughout the summer.
