After School Program

The J. Ashburn Youth Center will offer after school tutoring. Our objective is to realize a measurable improvement in test scores between a pre and post tests taken by the students. All eligible students, 3rd through 8th grades, will receive 24 hours of tutoring. Middle School Students will attend 3 two hour tutoring sessions for 4 weeks. Staff will develop collaborate with parents to complete an Improvement Achievement Plan for the child that includes academic goals, timelines, and assessments.

High School Program List

  • AA Meetings: “Always Available” Meetings have a program format designed to provide teens the platform to have an open dialogue about issues both current and past in regards to minority affairs. Meetings are often centered on a current event and expand into an open conversation where participants are encouraged to provide their thoughts and input.
  • Conquerors Mentoring Program: A comprehensive program designed for a target group of at-risk high school teens. Program focuses on the enhancement of both social-behavioral characteristics, as well as the academic enrichment of all participants. The ultimate goal is for each participant to understand the skills needed to position themselves for a lifetime of success.
  • ACT Preparation Classes: Classes are based on software donated to the Center that exposes participants to the information needed to be successful on the ACT exam and enhance their position in terms of financial aid toward a college education. Software allows lessons to be customized according to the level of each individual and therefore provide a step-by-step process toward becoming more confident and prepared for the ACT exam.
  • OGT Preparation Classes: Classes are based on the Ohio Department of Education website which allows participants to gain success tips for passing the test, exposure to new questions on the exam, as well as take practice exams. Exam questions can be reviewed and taken again to increase confidence and become more prepared for actual exam.
  • Homework Assistance: Sessions give participants a format to receive any assistance needed to complete and more importantly, comprehend homework assignments.
  • Weightlifting Classes: Classes are divided into different structured sessions for teen-aged females and males. Participants will be initially measured in different fitness areas and afterward will work with staff to develop an individual fitness plan for improved physical fitness. Staff will measure continued physical fitness to ensure steady progress toward established goals.
  • Exercise Classes: Sessions provide an opportunity to become physically fit through aerobics training. Participants will be measured both initially as well as throughout the sessions in several different fitness areas in order to report progress made.
  • Reach Out Basketball League: League provides a mixture of both adult and teen-aged participants that play in an intramural environment. Program challenges individuals by emphasizing the importance of playing your part in a team setting, as well as hardwork in achieving a goal.
  • Open Gym: Participants are invited to enjoy free play or “pick-up” games of basketball in the gymnasium area.
  • Computer Time: Participants are invited to surf the Internet, play games, and enjoy free use of the Center’s software.
  • Game Room: Participants are invited to enjoy the games of ping-pong, fooseball, as well as several different board games.
