JAJYC After-School Program – September 2, 2008 thru
June 4, 2009
J. Ashburn Jr. Youth Center assists youth in strengthening academic
performance through academic daily homework sessions, one hour a day. We
also provide wholesome use of free time and create an environment for
artistic expression, growth and development while fostering creative
thinking. Provided as a skill based enrichment program, classes are
offered as open art, one on one art and special art projects. A dinner
meal is available for participants

Measure Up! Middle School After-School Program –

No Child Left Behind Tutoring – October 15, 2008
through March 2009
The J. Ashburn Youth Center will offer No Child Left Behind Tutoring. Our
objective is to realize a measurable improvement in test scores between a
pre and post tests taken by the students. All eligible students,
kindergarten through 8th grades, will receive 24 hours of tutoring. Middle
School Students will attend 3 two hour tutoring sessions for 4 weeks.
Staff will develop collaborate with parents to complete an Improvement
Achievement Plan for the child that includes academic goals, timelines,
and assessments.
Teen Hope & Empowerment (Female) Mentoring Program
The Teen Hope & Empowerment Mentoring Program is a new after school
program for girls only. This program replicates successful, comprehensive
teen youth development/pregnancy prevention activities including exposure
to mentors and role models, self-advocacy, leadership opportunities,
post-secondary awareness, and workforce development. Participants will
conclude this year-long program with a community service learning project
that will address a community need.

Conqueror’s (Male) Mentoring Program
The Conqueror’s Mentoring Program is an after school program for young men
(12 – 18 years old). The goals of the Conqueror’s Mentoring Program are to
provide youth with academic and employment success, effective and
comprehensive activities, and provide opportunities for youth in
activities related to leadership. The program incorporates four
components: educational support, career awareness and job club, lifetime
sports, and family life and sex education. As a joint venture with the
female mentoring program, participants will conclude this year-long
program with a community service learning project that will address the
prevention of teenage pregnancy prevention.

Summer Life Enrichment Program – June 14 thru August
15, 2009
The J. Ashburn Jr. Youth Center Summer Life Enrichment Program is designed
for area underprivileged youth and provides programming that is a
combination of both academic and social development activities. The 2008
program is centered on the theme: Science, Technology, Engineering, and
Math (STEM). Participants take part in a daily curriculum that is a
balance of both academic enhancement classes and extracurricular
activities that include gym, computer, chess, dance, Girl Scouts, and Boy
Scouts to name a few. Campers also are taken on weekly educational field
trips and fun-filled outings.

Lead The Way – October 4, 2008 thru August 2009
Lead The Way is a local initiative that partnered with the J. Ashburn Jr.
Youth
Center. Lead The Way provides educational enrichment and internship
opportunities for students with physical, sensory or learning
disabilities. Lead The Way provides successful transition development
activities with a focus on areas of need specific to youth with
disabilities, including exposure to mentors and role models with and
without disabilities, tutoring (reading & writing), homework help
(academic achievement), self-advocacy, post-secondary awareness, workforce
development, and summer employment.
